Cancers affecting the brain and communication

Cancer that affects the brain can impact on a person's understanding and speech.

It is not always easy for the person to:

  • follow what someone says or has written
  • remember things
  • concentrate for more than a short period.

When expressing their views it may not always be easy to:

  • find the right words
  • use complex sentences
  • remember what they are talking about
  • express or control their emotions.

Key actions

To enable a person with a cancer affecting the brain to engage more fully, make sure you have supplied:

  • a safe and comfortable environment in which to work
  • sufficient time to have their say and to read information
  • spoken and written materials available in a clear and accessible form.
