Visual impairment and communication

People with a visual impairment may have difficulty with accessing:

  • unfamiliar buildings
  • written information
  • visual presentations
  • non-verbal communication such as gestures and facial expressions.

Key actions

For a person with a visual impairment to engage more fully, ask them what they require. This may be:

  • good lighting
  • documentation that uses a large, clear font and simple layout
  • audio advice and information
  • audio recording of meetings
  • access to equipment for producing braille documents or recordings of documents
