Training for Trainers: Inclusive communication
This is a short online training module in inclusive communication. It has been developed for trainers to make your training more accessible to people with diverse communication support needs.
The module has been adapted from a series of face-to-face sessions offered in 2009-2010.
Why complete this module?
Remove barriers
People with communication support needs are often described as 'hard to reach' by those wanting to encourage individuals to get involved.
But often it is not they that are 'hard to reach'. A lack of understanding and support can mean people face barriers to:
- information
- opportunities
- training
This module will provide you with information and tools to make your training more inclusive.
Increase your skills
It does not have all the answers. But it will help you think differently and enhance your skills base.
6 Communication Support Principles
Communication support needs are diverse and go wider than those related to sensory impairments and English as an additional language.
The training is based on the adoption of 6 Communication Support Principles. We believe that if you put these 6 principles into practice your activities will be more inclusive. Go to the Talk for Scotland toolkit for more details about the Communication Support Principles.

Journey
It is important to consider communication access from the beginning to the end of any training activity.
This learning is set out as a journey. It represents the stages you will go through in planning and delivering training.
At each stage you will find:

People
To help you put theory into practice, we ask you to think about some people who might be your participants. We ask you to think about them at each stage.
