Communication Forum Scotland
members, individually and together, promote the involvement
of people with communication support needs in varied ways
Civic Participation Network Project
The Civic Participation Network is Communication Forum Scotland’s
first major project.
It is funded by the Scottish Government. Stage 1 was completed
in June 2008. Funds have been granted to March 2011 to build
on this work.
Aim
To remove barriers faced by those with communication support
needs wishing to be active citizens.
Activities
Training
for active citizenship
During Stage 1 we piloted courses on how to influence
decision makers in Scotland. The courses involved people
requiring support to access information and express their
views.
The pilot brought together trainers experienced in capacity
building and trainers experienced in communication support.
This sharing of skills proved successful.
As a result the Inclusive Communication Trainers group
has been established to:
- learn from each other
- promote more communication accessible training - develop relevant training support
materials.
Promotion of inclusive
communication to service providers and decision makers This will be done usingTalk for Scotland:
a practical toolkit for engaging with people with communication
support needs. This was launched in May 2008 with the
active involvement of people with varied communication
support needs.
Together we will be enhancing the
toolkit and promoting its key messages. We will work
with service providers to develop ways of doing this
most effectively within their own organisations.
The toolkit is supported by
the Communication
Support Needs Database.
This offers links to communication disability organisations
in Scotland, and services to assist organisations to
put inclusive communication into practice. The database
is hosted by Update, Scotland's National Disability
Information Service.
Development
of good practice case studies
A number of case studies will be undertaken. These will
show how to put communication support into practice. Information
will include resources required.
